Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a diverse cast of personalities, and a thrilling plot including angels, fiends, and dark forces increasing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Revealing details for the latest installment of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and introduced the initial group of characters who will branch out from the primary party to undertake their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Considering an extensive roster, it was clear from the beginning that having everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, weaving together the individual narratives before splitting into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

Per the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the developments of the third episode show why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

First, the team understands precisely where to go next after a brutal opening clash with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise initiated the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his own means, breaking into the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd close behind.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having defied his relatives’ demands to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their position as prominent individuals in the powerful family could assist the group access places they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The cleric betrayed the powerful family and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

According to episode three’s post-show segment, we discover that the combat party will be absent the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to assemble the Questers and Planners parties.

Fans can expect discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in the season’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on next week.
